Circle Cafe

without comments

The Circle Cafe is located in Alpha, a town which doesn’t have a lot else in it.  You might go to Alpha for the Farmer’s Market, or because you are taking the back way to Crystal Falls, but as far as I’m concerned, the best reason to go to Alpha is to eat at the Circle Cafe.

The Circle Cafe is located in a corner of the old Porter School, the building which dominates the town.  Porter School pictures, trophies, and other memorabilia decorate the interior, on loan from the Alpha Museum.  The sturdy, rustic seating is handmade by Hoogland’s Woodshop in Crystal Falls.  The inside of the cafe is bright, and the large windows looking out onto the town circle let in even more light.

The Circle Cafe features homemade soups and a different homemade dessert every day.  Ask your server what’s currently being offered.  The cafe also uses zero trans fat oil for cooking.  Banquet facilities are available upon request.  There is a kid’s menu available, and kid’s menu items include a lollipop.  The cafe also boasts its own burger.  The “Circle Burger” is a double-decker affair which features both a bratwurst patty and a hamburger patty.

Starting April 4, the Circle Cafe offers a fish fry on Friday nights.  The fish fry is available from 4:30 PM - 8:30 PM and features perch, walleye, and cod.  This is the only time the cafe is open in the evenings, as it is usually a breakfast/lunch place only.

Speaking of breakfast, the Circle Cafe offers a breakfast menu which is served all day, and which I take full advantage of when I visit.  Breakfast at the Circle Cafe is tasty and filling.  At my last visit I noticed that they finally added “one pancake” to their menu - the perfect serving size for me.  The pancakes are as big as a dinner plate and very fluffy.  Lucas is usually partial to their french toast, which is made on nice, thick slices of bread.  Breakfast specials are changed daily, and may be items from the menu or something new that the chef felt like serving.

Alpha is a tiny town, located on County Road 424 just off US-2.  Take the turn off at Split Rock and stop in at the Circle Cafe.  The food will be excellent, the service friendly, and you will definitely leave satisfied.
