“Quick Shots” are pictures of places or buildings that I think are neat looking, or provide a good opportunity for photos/drawing, but where there isn’t a lot to do. This building - which I believe is the Tobin Mine - is a perfect example of that. Why do I think it’s the Tobin Mine? Well, it’s on a very short road called Tobin Mine Road. The only other things on this road are houses, and while there’s no sign out front, I didn’t see anything else around that could have been a mine or mine offices. If someone sees this picture and wants to tell me “Hey, that’s the old Piggly Wiggly store”, then I’ll be glad to correct the post. Until then, though, let’s just assume that this is, in fact, the Tobin Mine.
Located near Crystal Falls, the Tobin Mine was in operation from 1901 to 1958 and shipped a total of 4,630,052 tons of ore (source: Crystal Falls web site). You cannot get onto the mine grounds because they are private property, but you can get many good shots from the road and just outside the fence.
Here’s a picture just to give you an idea of what you’ll see at the site. I wish I could have been there when the leaves were still on the trees.
There are several other outbuildings that are not pictured. This seems to be the “main” building or office in the compound - it was certainly the most visually interesting to me.
If you’re in Crystal Falls, take Tobin-Alpha Rd. (the one with the Jubilee Grocery Store on the corner) toward Alpha. Tobin Mine Rd. will be on your left - take the left and follow the road until it hits Carpenter Rd. The Tobin Mine will be at the intersection of the two roads. Once again, this is private property, so don’t trespass. Stay on public land and get your pictures that way.
